Ultrasonic Metal Loss Inspection
The Ultrasonic Wall Measurement Tool is a highly sophisticated device for the detection and determination of metal-loss and manufacturing type defects resident in the pipewall. This includes corrosion on the outer and inner surface, channelling, blisters, bulges, inclusions and laminations. The tool uses immersion based ultrasound sensors for direct measurement of defects.
The key difference between a UT tool and that of an MFL tool is the type and application of the detection technique. UT is "direct measurement" whereas MFL is "inferential" thus UT provides a more accurate defect description, this is especially necessary for the application of advanced assessment codes or in determination of the repair technology to be used.
